Monday Mourning by Kathy Reichs is a crime fiction book, where, a forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan tries to unveil the identity of three skeletons that were found in the basement of a pizza parlor in Montreal, Canada. Brennan works with homicide detectives Luc Claudel and his partner, Michel Charbonneau, and Andrew Ryan, who is also her lover. Throughout the book, both Brennan and Claudel doubted each other’s competence to solve the case. According to Brennan institution, she believes that the three skeletons might be recent, however, Claudel speculates it to be century old due to findings of three antique buttons near their bodies. As a result, Claudel puts very little effort in this case, whereas, Brennan is determined to identify the year of death so to validate her inspection and to drew attention of Claudel and her other colleagues to this case. In the process of solving this investigation, she finds herself dragged to other homicides that were affiliated with the three skeleton remains. As a forensic anthropologist, Brennan main focus is to assist law enforcement agencies with her knowledge to inspect skeletons. Her main motive in this case was to determine individual s age, sex, time of death, and physical condition from their skeleton remains. It is extremely crucial that Brennan diagnoses the skeleton remains accurately, as the legal investigation greatly depends on it. Materials: Thermometer, (1) 600 ml beaker, (1) battery jar, and (1) 125 Erlenmeyer Flask, (1) stopper with a 2 in. piece of glass, glove, ring standProcedure: Set up an Erlenmeyer Flask with a stopper and 2-inch piece of glass tubing inserted in the stopper. Boil approximately 400 mL of water by allowing a clamp to press on the top of the stopper. After about 5 minutes the air in the flask will be at a temperature of the boiling water approximately (100 C). When you think you have reached this point, proceed further, but first check the exact temperature of the water and record to the nearest 0.1 C. With your finger firmly over the end of the glass tube (to prevent air from entering the flask) invert the flask into a 1,000 mL beaker of battery jar of ice water. When the neck of the flask is completely submerged, remove your finger, but keep the flask from tipping over in the water as you proceed to cover the entire flask with ice water. Allow the flask to cool completely. After approximately 5 minutes, the temperature of the air in the flask will be equal to that of the ice water (0 C). Check the exact temperature of the ice water with a thermometer. Observe the contents of the flask. Before removing the flask from the ice water, be sure the pressure of the air inside the flask equals the pressure of the air in the room. To do this, equalize the levels of the water inside and outside the flask by raising the flask. Hold this position for three minutes. Now place your finger over the tube end, remove the flask from the bottom of the jar. Place the flask right side up on the table. You may now take your finger off the tube end. Using a graduated cylinder, measure the volume of water in the flask to the nearest 0.12 mL. Now refill the flask with tap water. Fill all the way to the top and gently replace the stopper assembly to force out excess water. Remove the stopper assembly and measure the volume of the flask by measuring the water in it. This quantity represents the volume of hot air that was in the flask.

This parent/child conflict between Leah and Nathan in Barbara Kingsolver’s novel, The Poisonwood Bible contributes to the meaning of the story by pointing out that Nathan’s lack self awareness and devoid of guilt is the root of the conflict. There are many conflicts between Nathan and Leah as the story progresses, but the most predominate conflict deals with Leah’s desire for independence. The conflict emerges due to Nathans inability to understand Leah’s needs. His self absorption and lack of self awareness leaves him with the lack of being able to feel guilt. Leah practically worships her father in the opening chapters of the book, as shown in this quote when she is describing her father to the reader, â€Å"Not everyone can see it, but my father’s heart is as large as his hands. Of course not everything goes perfect for Leah and her father because all families have disputes, and after following her father for so long conflicts begin to form. As the story continues Leah gradually recognizes her father’s errors and she turns her back on him. She has always followed his rules and always believed that Nathans laws were the laws that she had to abide by. She soon discovers that she disagrees with some of his ideas, like in this quote about Nathans ideas concerning college, â€Å"My father says a girl who fails to marry is veering from God’s plan that’s what he’s got against college for Adah and me, beside the wasted expense—and I’m sure what he says is true. But without college how will I learn anything of any account to teach others? (150). This quote shows how Leah starts to doubt her fathers ways, she is not flat-out disobeying him but she does not believe that his ideas are true. Leah wants to be independent, but it’s hard for her to change because she has been dependent on her father her entire life. In this quote Leah shows the reader how much she has changed, â€Å"Al l my life I’ve tried to set my shoes squarely in his footprints believing if only I stayed close enough to him those same clean simple laws would rule my life as well Yet with each passing day I find myself farther away. (244) With each thing her father does including punishing her for her owl, and losing his temper frequently, she finds her self more independent because she has her own thoughts and beliefs that are different from her father. The reason why Nathan and Leah have this conflict is because of Nathan’s narrow-mindedness and lack of self awareness. The main purpose of The Poisonwood Bible is to show how different people deal with guilt. Nathan however has no guilt, and this is the source of many conflicts with Leah. Nathan has no self-awareness. When he does something he never thinks of his family, he only thinks of himself. This greatly affects his relationship with all his daughters. Leah tries so hard to be on her father’s good side, as shown in this quote where she tries to answer her father’s question about religion, but fails, â€Å"If only I could ever bring forth all that I knew quickly enough to suit father† (36). Nothing will ever please Nathan because he doesn’t really care about Leah; he only cares about spreading Christianity. This selfishness eventually leads to Leah disobeying her father like in this passage regarding the hunt Leah wanted to go on, â€Å"Leah slung her bow over her shoulder. â€Å"I’m going with the men and that’s final. † †¦Father went crazy. We’d always wondered what would happen is we flat-out disobeyed him†¦ He lit out after her with his wide leather belt already coming out of his pants as he stomped through the dirt. But by the time he got to the edge of the grass of the yard she was gone. † (340). This is the first time Leah actually disobeys Nathan. Leah wanted to be a part of the fight, and Nathan was holding her back. She wanted to become independent, but with Nathan controlling her she couldn’t. Nathan wouldn’t listen to her reasoning, instead he believed that he was right, and Leah was wrong. With this breakthrough Leah’s opinion of Nathan begins to change. She begins to see Nathan in a negative light, rather than her previous positive light. This quote is when Nathan is outraged at Tata Ndu’s election for Jesus Christ, â€Å"It was hard to believe I’d ever wanted to be near to him myself. If I had a prayer left in me, it was that this red-faced man shaking with rage would never lay a hand on me again. † (333). Because of Nathan’s anger, because of selfishness, and because of his lack of guilt, he was not aware of his daughters desire to be loved by him. Because of this Leah decided that her father was wrong, and that she wanted to be more independent. Barbara Kingsolver’s main theme shows how certain individuals deal with the burden of guilt and Nathan and Leah’s simple conflict contributes to this meaning. Each of the 5 Price women has a different way of coping with the guilt that Africa has provided for them. Nathan however has no guilt. He is a very stubborn egocentric man and thinks very little of the people in his life. Leah perhaps is the very opposite of her father. She wants to accept Africa, but standing in her fathers shadow is not helping her. When she realizes her desire to be moral her only choice is to leave her father and do what she believes is right. In this quote Leah is talking to Anatole during the Ant attack on their village, â€Å"I want to be righteous, Anatole. To know right from wrong, that’s all. I want to live the right way and be redeemed. † (309). Nathan’s lack of guilt is the cause of the conflict between him and his daughter Leah. Leah’s method of coping with guilt is to join in ad become a part of Africa. Nathan on the other hand wants to change Africa completely. Because of these two very different opinions Leah finds herself having to choose between good and evil, light and dark. Nathan’s lack of guilt contributes to the meaning by proving another side of dealing with guilt, and how not feeling this guilt can hurt the people around you. Barbara Kingsolver uses this conflict to tie into her theme. In doing so Kingsolver gives the reader a much deeper understanding of what Nathan and Leah are going through. Leah’s desire for independence was the conflict, the source of the conflict was Nathans lack of guilt, and this conflict contributes a deeper meaning to Kingsolver’s theme. Even though Leah admired her father more then all four of Nathans daughters, she ends up hating her father more that the other girls do.

College offers a plethora of opportunities to those who choose to attend. There is horseback riding club, chess club and even Pokemon club these days. However, if a person hopes to join a club based on his or her sexual preference, think again. They are not allowed on public school campuses. It is a good idea that homosexual clubs and organizations be censored. They are offensive and inappropriate. If people try to ban clubs in college based on homosexual preference, they will be closing out many other clubs to come. For example, according to the Bible study groups, The banning of homosexual clubs is a good idea, but not a logical one. It is a step backwards for our bible study clubs, it will only cause them to lash out and close down our groups, too (www.family.org). For every club out there based on sexual preference there are one hundred clubs that focus on bible study. Since bible study clubs are just as controversial as homosexual ones, they are worried that if the banning of those clubs happens, they will be next. To empower school officials to close down and ban clubs based on homosexual preference is a marvelous thought, but it empowers them to shut down appropriate clubs like the bible study groups. In addition, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered group, also the LGBT has said that, Any club/organization or school discrimination against homosexual clubs and organizations will lose funding, travel funds, meeting place and right to have a club on campus immediately (www.leaderu.com//marco). This is a comfort to the clubs of homosexuals because their rights on campuses are protected. Conversely, it is a discomfort to the clubs who do not support their ideas and ways of thinking because now they are forced to at least pretend to be supportive of those clubs. This is not sensitive to the idea that this may bring about even more tensions between organizations because of the forced pretend support. So, the organizations trying to rid college campuses of the clubs based on sexual preference need to stop and think about what other clubs they could be doing damage to first. Student-led pro homosexual groups, called gay alliances, are an on-growing  disturbance and are inappropriate to have in school. For example, gay extremists are pressuring the Trustees board to oppose other minority clubs since theirs are currently being targeted. They are threatening to, take matters into their own hands if no one steps into do anything about this. This is a dilemma because one clubs being targeted is no excuse for them to be able to discriminate against others. After all, they are upset at being discriminated against. By continuing to single out groups unlike them, they are only welcoming more upon themselves. In addition, students attending Iowa Colleges who are offended by homosexual clubs and their behaviors, have voiced their comments and been completely disregarded. One student went to the board of education and stated that, clubs that promote and praise homosexuality make me feel uncomfortable as a student in this college (www.leaderu.com/marco). His comment was totally disregarded and never brought up again. That is disturbing because the only voices being heard are those which belong to the gay groups and that is not fair. It is also a problem because students who are paying for school are not being listened to and need to be in a time of controversy like this one. People need to think long and hard about whether or not they want their college kids subjected to homosexual clubs and/or organizations. The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered group is a rapidly growing group across the country. They are fighting for the rights of Lesbians Gays Bisexuals and Trangendered people. For example, the LGBT have voiced their opinions loud and clear, We are just like everyone else and deserve clubs to prove it. The struggle of the LGBT has moved to center stage since 1994, they are fighting for their individual rights on campus as well as in the classroom. Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered group have caused quite a stir on college campuses and that is affecting all other students learning. They need to quit. The affect it is having on bi-stander students is neither fair nor appropriate. Furthermore, We are no different than all the other student who wander this campus. Its the LGBT population saying things like that that get other students confused. Students who do not attend homosexual clubs are forced to watch rallies in the union about things they dont  completely understand and that is not fair to them. People who choose to attend college do not need to be subjected to this whole ordeal, it should be fought somewhere besides school campuses. Clubs that applaud sexual preference and behavior are unnecessary on public school campuses. These sexual preference based organizations only cause strife and confusion for students. Since these clubs are only applicable to a small minority population of students, they are hard to support and condone; this causes tense situations.
